Search "dentiste" in Gatineau and Google shows you Gatineau dentists.
Search "dentist" from the exact same spot, and about one in every five top-10 results is a clinic in Ottawa.
Same street. Same phone. One letter different. A different set of dentists.
That was the first thing that jumped out of this study, and it matters most to anyone about to open a clinic in Gatineau. Your patients search in two languages. Google treats those as two different markets.
So we mapped both.
How we did this study
We ran a 13×13 Google Maps grid across Gatineau, with points one mile apart, centred near Boulevard de la Gappe and Les Promenades. That's 169 search locations covering Hull, the Plateau, the Gatineau sector and the edges toward Chelsea and Cantley.
At every point we searched twice: once for "dentiste" and once for "dentist". We recorded the top 20 results each time.
That's 6,760 Google Maps results and 332 different dental practices.
Then we cleaned it up. Points that fall in Ontario came out. So did rural points on the edge of the grid, where the nearest clinic is more than 2 km away or the nearby practices are in Chelsea, Cantley or Val-des-Monts. That left 52 search locations inside urban Gatineau, and that's what this study is about.
For each location we looked at who ranks #1, who makes the top 3, who makes the top 10, how far those practices are from the searcher, and how many Google reviews they have.
We split the city into six areas so that wherever a new clinic opens, there's a section below on what it's walking into.
What we found
1. Nobody owns Gatineau
Across 52 search locations, 31 different practices ranked #1. No single practice was #1 at more than four.
53 different practices made the top 3 somewhere. 87 made the top 10.
That's a fragmented market. For a new clinic, that's good news. There's no giant you have to beat everywhere. There are local leaders, block by block.
2. Reach and #1 are two different things
The practice with the widest reach was Centre Dentaire Touchette on Saint-René. It showed up in the top 10 at 31 of 52 locations, about 60% of the city. It also had the most Google reviews of any practice we checked: 414.
But it was #1 at only three locations.
Dental Clinic of the Outaouais Valleys on Saint-Joseph was in the top 10 at 23 locations, with 62 reviews.
Being visible across the city and winning your own neighbourhood are separate jobs.
3. Distance decides most #1 spots
The median #1 practice was 0.99 km from the person searching. Half of all #1 practices were within a kilometre. 94% were within 2 km.
The closest practice to the searcher ranked #1 at 22 of 52 locations (42%).
If you're more than 2 km from someone, you're very unlikely to be their #1 in Gatineau.
4. Reviews didn't decide who ranked #1
Clinique dentaire Lorrain on La Vérendrye Est had 38 reviews when we checked. It was #1 at four locations, tied for the most of any practice in the city.
Centre Dentaire de La Vérendrye had 31 reviews and made the top 3 at eight locations.
Clinique dentaire du Versant on Montée Paiement had 29 reviews and a 3.2 rating. It was still #1 at two locations.
Meanwhile the most-reviewed practice we checked was #1 at three.
Reviews matter for whether someone actually calls you. They weren't what put practices at the top of the map here.
5. The language you search in changes who you see
This is the big one.
"dentiste" | "dentist" | |
|---|---|---|
Share of top-10 spots held by Ottawa practices | 1.2% | 22.1% |
Locations with an Ottawa practice in the top 10 | 2 of 52 | 32 of 52 |
Locations with an Ottawa practice in the top 3 | 1 | 10 |
The #1 practice was different between the two searches at 10 of 52 locations.
Search in French and Google keeps you on the Quebec side of the river. Search in English and it starts pulling in clinics from across the river in Ottawa and Orléans.
It isn't the same everywhere, though. Close to the bridges, Ottawa takes a big share. Further north it barely appears. More on that in the area breakdown.
6. One building can fill the top 3
At one location near de la Gappe, all three top spots went to listings at the same address. Three separate dental listings, one building.
When several listings share a building, they can take the entire top 3 at their own door. Something to know if you're opening next to one.
Gatineau, area by area
Here's the whole city at a glance. "Different top-3 practices" is how many separate clinics made the top 3 somewhere in that area. The more there are, the more crowded the fight for those spots.
Area | Search locations | Different #1 practices | Different top-3 practices | Ottawa share of top 10 ("dentist") |
|---|---|---|---|---|
Downtown Hull (Portage / lower Saint-Joseph) | 8 | 5 | 16 | 41% |
Gatineau sector east (Paiement / Maloney / La Vérendrye) | 15 | 10 | 13 | 24% |
Plateau / Aylmer east | 12 | 6 | 13 | 33% |
de la Gappe / Promenades / de l'Hôpital | 7 | 5 | 12 | 6% |
Upper Saint-Joseph / Mont-Bleu | 6 | 5 | 8 | 2% |
Limbour / Touraine | 4 | 2 | 4 | 3% |
Now the detail. Each area ends with what a new clinic opening there would be walking into.
Downtown Hull (Portage / lower Saint-Joseph)
The most crowded area in the study. Eight search locations, and 16 different practices made the top 3.
Dentisterie Capitale du Portage (128 reviews) was the local leader: #1 at four locations and top 3 at six.
Here's what's unusual. The closest practice was #1 at only one of eight locations. Downtown Hull is so dense that being nearest isn't enough on its own.
It's also where the language split hits hardest. Search "dentist" here and Ottawa practices take 41% of the top 10. An Ottawa clinic made the top 3 at five of eight locations, and the #1 changed at four of eight.
If you're opening here: you're competing with Gatineau clinics in French and downtown Ottawa clinics in English. Your English presence matters as much as your French one. Being close won't carry you the way it does elsewhere in the city.
Gatineau sector east (Paiement / Maloney / La Vérendrye)
The biggest area in the study, with 15 locations, and the most spread out at #1: 10 different practices took the top spot.
Centre Dentaire Labrosse on La Vérendrye (154 reviews) was the constant. It made the top 3 at 13 of 15 locations. Centre Dentaire de La Vérendrye (31 reviews) and Clinique dentaire Lorrain (38 reviews) each made the top 3 at eight.
Distance rules here. The closest practice was #1 at 11 of 15 locations.
In English, Ottawa practices took 24% of the top 10, mostly clinics across the river in the east end. The #1 changed at four locations.
If you're opening here: this is the most proximity-driven part of Gatineau. Practices with 30-something reviews were winning. A new clinic can realistically own the blocks around it. Expect one established practice to show up in the top 3 almost everywhere.
Plateau / Aylmer east
Twelve locations, six different #1 practices, 13 different practices in the top 3.
Clinique dentaire du village urbain du plateau (49 reviews) was #1 at four locations. Destination Santé Dentaire (38 reviews) made the top 3 at six. Dentiste du Plateau (160 reviews) and PerioClinik (116 reviews) each made it at five.
PerioClinik is a periodontics and implant practice. It still ranked in the top 3 for a plain "dentiste" search.
